This video is used as a reference for taking biological measurements of snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio) during at-sea surveys. These precise measurements are essential for identifying crab classes (juveniles vs. adults) in order to characterize the population structure of the species.
The content of the video therefore allows:
to identify the target species (C. opilio) from other crab species,
to determine the sex of the crabs (by the shape of the abdomen),
to show how to perform morphometric measurements in males (carapace width and claw height) and females (carapace width),
to characterize carapace condition in males (ranked from 1 to 5 to estimate age),
to assess the maturity stage of females (immature and mature),
to evaluate the reproductive status of mature females (complete and incomplete clutch, as well as the four categories of egg color).
