Here is Maeve Townsend performing the song Carrig Rua which was written by her uncle John Furlong from Ferns in 1985.
His entry in the Fleadh that year won him the All-Ireland medal, and the song has remained popular among traditional singers ever since. It has even earned All-Ireland medals for four different singers over the years. The song looks out across the Wexford landscape and remembers its history. From the hill, the singer reflects on places like Ferns, Vinegar Hill and Boolavogue, recalling the men who fought and died there in 1798. It ends with a sense of peace and gratitude for the freedom and quiet now found on that same land.
This song was recorded by Aileen Lambert as part of the Wexford Song project in 2021.
