Morro Bay Kite Festival Early Bird Fact Finding

After the spate of recent winter atmospheric river events, the canyons surrounding Morro bay have discharged both water and debris into the bay. Much of the debris washes up on the beach. This is a rare situation to have so much material deposited in such a short span of time. If you plan to attend the 2023 event, please be prepared. You will need sturdy shoes. The area where kite flyers anchor their large kites will likely be changed either closer to the dunes or toward the water. The debris on the beach means that people will need to cooperate and be mindful of their choices of kites to fly. The potential to snag tails and tentacles is real. Those flying large rotating bol kites will be challenged to find a sufficient swath of clean sand to do so.
Inexperienced kite flyers and those flying cheap kites may not appreciate the technical challenges presented to those who fly the large and pricey show kites.
If the beach is not scraped or otherwise groomed before the annual kiting event, it will be everyone's responsibility to educate and tolerate while we all happily participate.
