The Sureswari Temple in Sonepur, Odisha, is an ancient Shakti shrine dedicated to the goddess Sursuri (a Sanskritized version of Sureswari), located on the banks of the Tel River. It is known for its connection to tantric practices and is believed to have been built by the Chouhan king Achal Singh Deo between 1725 and 1750. A key feature is the mysterious "Khaul Gad," an ancient altar linked to a legend involving Parashurama.

Location and architecture:
Location: The temple is situated on the left bank of the Tel River in the temple town of Sonepur, Subarnapur district, Odisha.

Architecture: It is a Pancharatharekha Deula built on a raised platform. The present temple was completed by Maharaja Viramitra Singhdeo between 1902 and 1937, with additions made during his reign.

Deity and mythology
Presiding Deity: Maa Sursuri or Sureswari, who is represented by an eight-armed Mahisamarddini Durga image.

Mythology: According to legend, the temple was built by Parashurama to atone for the sin of killing Kshatriyas, who performed a yajna at a site believed to be a mysterious altar known as the "Khaul Gad" within the temple premises. Some locals also identify this altar as the seat of his mother,
