IF you've ever searched online for information about VU meters, calibrating for analog modelling, different converters, terms like VU/RMS/dBu/dBFS, you've probably banged your head against a wall.
This video is boring, and may require a few repetitions/pausing to fully understand. Take your time and it should all make sense.
BTW, this concept is similar to the guitar DI gainstaging video, but with some very crucial differences. Guitar DI's (usually) don't pass through mic preamps and line amps, they are intended to hit the pedals or amp at the level they leave the guitar at. Compressors and EQ's and tape machines are different because they expect to be used with a variety of different input levels.
