Hong Kong Tai Kwun × IKEA 50th Anniversary Exhibition: A Dual Experience Beyond Time

Located in the heart of Central, Tai Kwun (大館) is a landmark that represents Hong Kong's rich history and culture. Built in 1864 during the British colonial era, this architectural complex once served as the core of Hong Kong's judicial system. It comprises the Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and the Victoria Prison, all of which have been meticulously preserved, forming a unique judicial chain of "law enforcement, trial, and rehabilitation." Due to its grand scale, it has been affectionately referred to as "Tai Kwun" since the Victorian era, and this historic name continues to be used today.

Through a revitalization project in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, this architectural complex, which has witnessed a century of Hong Kong's history, underwent a stunning transformation in 2018. It has now evolved into a multi-cultural space that combines heritage conservation, contemporary art, and urban leisure. Strolling through this site allows visitors to experience both the architectural charm of the colonial era and cutting-edge cultural creativity simultaneously.

Currently, the ongoing IKEA 50th Anniversary Special Exhibition adds a unique twist to this historic site. The exhibition showcases covers from IKEA's classic product catalogs over the past fifty years, inviting visitors to reflect on the evolution of design from this Nordic furniture brand. Several interactive experience areas are also set up on-site, allowing attendees to become models from the catalog and create their own "IKEA style" moments. By sharing their photos on social media, visitors have the chance to participate in a claw machine game, and if luck is on their side, they might even take home a commemorative IKEA Swedish meatball souvenir!
