One Sheep At A Time: Shearing With A DIY Ranch Setup

Every year, a few sheep make their way home from the winter range still wearing last year’s wool coat. And with the summer heat setting in, it's time to track down those stragglers and give them a much-needed haircut.
Since getting them all to our main shearing barn isn't always an option, I built a homemade mobile shearing rig off the back of our yellow truck. It may not be fancy, but it gets the job done—and there ain’t no made like homemade and American made.
Whether it’s in the barn or out in the field, rain or shine, shearing sheep is a job that never gets old for me. Each sheep is different—big or small, smooth or wrinkly—and each one teaches me something new. I may not shear thousands of sheep, but the few I do keep me learning (and sweating) every season.
