The ancient city of Baalbek and the Cedar of God are arguably two of Lebanon’s two most important cultural and historical treasures. Just like the beach and the mountains, it is possible to see Baalbek and the Cedar Tree in one day in Lebanon. Baalbek was originally a Phoenician city dating back to 9000 BC, later known as Heliopolis in 334 BC under the Alexander the Great and the Greeks. Baalbek (Heliopolis) came under Roman rule in 64 BC, in which some of the largest and most impressive Roman structures were built, like the Temple of Jupiter and the Temple of Bacchus. After its peak during Roman rule, other groups held control throughout history, including the Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols, Ottomans, and most recently the militant group Hezbollah. Baalbek is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the pride of the Lebanese people. Lebanon’s Cedar Tree, including the famous “Cedar of God”, represents another iconic cultural gem of the Lebanese people. Al Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is the largest nature reserve in Lebanon, with the Al Shouf Biosphere covering 5% of the country. Join me, as we visit Lebanon’s two most iconic cultural treasures: The Ancient City of Baalbek and the Lebanese Cedar tree. Find out what it is like to travel around Lebanon in 2025.
