Title:
Instead of translating the title literally (which would have been some variation on “One Glance, Ten Thousand Years”), I have chosen to exercise a bit of poetic license, rendering the idiom 《一眼万年》in a way that better captures its emotional resonance. In Chinese, this idiom is frequently used by lovers to express sentiments such as “One glimpse, and it’s love forever” or “One look, and I’ll remember you always.”
I chose this interpretation of《一眼万年》because I believe the song title subtly echoes one of the most beautiful and iconic lines in “Heaven Official’s Blessing”:
上元佳节，神武大街；惊鸿一瞥，百世沦陷。
—from the next-to-last chapter in both versions (specifically chapter 203 in the revised edition)
This line appears just before Hua Cheng returns on the night of Shangyuan after his year-long disappearance, having faded into nothingness at the end of the climactic battle with Jun Wu. Xie Lian, who misses Hua Cheng terribly, is reminiscing about the first time he met Hua Cheng more than 800 years ago, which also happened to be on the Shangyuan Festival. Here’s how the Seven Seas edition translated this line: “The auspicious Shangyuan Festival on the Grand Avenue of Divine Might, and the awe-inspiring first impression that had led to centuries of pining…” (vol. 8, ch. 132) Meanwhile, the ClearNoodle translation of the revised version renders it as: “The joyous Shangyuan Festival, Divine Might Avenue. A fleeting glimpse, and mired for centuries.”
Which just about encapsulates the romance plotline of hualian’s story in only 16 characters.
Points of View:
While the first stanza is clearly from Hua Cheng’s point of view, the middle three stanzas could be from either HC’s or XL’s perspective, and the final stanza — especially the last two lines — is primarily from Xie Lian’s point of view, echoing the section quoted above from the Seven Seas edition, when Xie Lian remarks in his inimitably unassuming way, “Hua Cheng wasn’t the only one that had fallen.”
