I will usually just leave a scope probe nearby the coil and see at which point the amplitude peaks but it's easy enough to just clip an led on the topload. For the peak voltage output it's typically a narrow window even at under 1 MHz so if using a DIY signal generator it would need to be fairly precise. Square waves with no offset would also work with some harmonics. Everything around the coil will also affect it. There are a lot of cool little circuit demonstrations showing how resonance and wireless transfer works but if you have a decent signal generator it seems the best way to conduct these experiments at the extremely low power levels.
