Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe in a Tri-Series, and you generally vote for Zimbabwe as the weakest of the three. It isn't the case, at least for this tournament. Although the Chevrons lost to the hosts in the curtain-raiser by five wickets, they bounced back in style to leave the Lankans stunned as they succumbed to a 67-run defeat in the second match.
Sri Lanka are now in need of a win to bring round one to a close in level terms, but they are up against Pakistan in the third match of the competition at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday (November 22).
The Men in Green sealed a tense win against Zimbabwe in the first game. Bowling first, they were slightly unlucky up front and had to wait for 8 overs for their first breakthrough. Once Mohammad Nawaz broke through the 72-run opening stand, Pakistan pulled things back and restricted the visitors to 147/8. Nawaz was the best of the lot and picked up two wickets. Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Salman Mirza took a wicket each. A couple of runouts just showed how good the hosts were on the field.
However, Pakistan had to work hard for the win. Openers Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub got into the double figures, but fell without going big. Babar Azam bagged another duck, while skipper Salman Ali Agha added only one to the scoreboard. Pakistan were reeling at 54/4 at one stage. Fakhar Zaman took the responsibility and scored 44 runs. He added a crucial stand with Usman Khan, who remained unbeaten on 37. However, it was Nawaz's vital cameo, scoring a 12-ball 21*, that sealed the game for the home side in the last over.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka bowled decent enough to restrict Zimbabwe to 162/8. Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three wickets to derail the Chevrons. Eshan Malinga, on debut, impressed with a two-wicket spell. Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera rattled the Sikandar Raza-led side with a wicket each.
It was a decent effort with the ball from the Dasun Shanaka-led team, but Charith Asalanka's absence hit them hard when the Lankans came out to chase. The in-form opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis departed early. Kusal Perera failed, too. Nothing much impressive from Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who came back to the side after a long time, but he was the only other batter besides skipper Shanaka to get into the double digits. He scored 11, while Shanaka fought with his 34. However, there was no real intent from the Sri Lankans as they were bowled out for just 95.
