👉🏽Please contact a professional arborist if you’re unsure about pruning your trees and for difficult tasks. We prune only small trees that are within arm’s reach. Never remove or prune a tree near power lines!
🌳Late winter is a great time to prune trees while they’re dormant making them less susceptible to disease and pests. Some pruning is beneficial to the health of certain trees. It opens up the canopy allowing sunlight and air circulation and prevent disease.
🌳Diseased twigs, branches, and ones that cross over other branches are removed as well as water sprouts (ones that grow vertically).
🌳The branch collar is an enlarged area located at the base of a branch joining the tree trunk. The branch bark ridge is a raised area right behind the collar. When removing a limb, it’s important not to cut flush to the trunk. The cut is angled down away from the trunk to prevent injuring the branch collar and bark ridge.
⚠️Wear proper eye protection and gloves before performing pruning tasks. Please do your own research and stay safe.
✅ A sharp pruner or handsaw will make easier and cleaner cuts and prevent tearing.
✅ Clean and disinfect your tools before and after each task.
❌ Leaving a stub can slow the sealing process of the wounded area and may cause decay making a tree vulnerable to disease and pest infestations.🦠🪲
✅ When a branch is cut properly the tree will compartmentalize forming a callus around the perimeter of the wound. There’s no need to apply a sealant, compartmentalization is the tree’s defense mechanism.
