ISHLT Pharmacy Professional Community Webinar - The Protocol Paradox: Are We Treating Guidelines or Patients? (18 November, 2025)
Traditional medical management has historically relied heavily on protocols designed to standardize medical care and reduce variation, to increase quality. However, the era of precision diagnostics, patient-centered outcomes, real-world data, and novel therapeutics challenges this ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. This webinar explores how personalized medicine is reshaping practice across MCS, transplant, and pulmonary hypertension. Protocolized management might be tested and safe, but has the potential to over- or under-treat. On the other hand, personalized medicine, using biomarkers, pharmacogenomics, and device data, offers precision medicine that MIGHT be just as effective, whilst minimizing side effects. The cynic might call these 'fads,' however, others might identify a real difference between patients and the care that they need, necessitating personalized medicine. Ultimately, the challenge for us as clinicians is where the rubber meets the road - to balance innovation with safety and cost-effectiveness – to determine if personalization truly changes outcomes or just adds complexity….
