Shirred Back Ruffle Baby Frock Cutting & Stitching | Easy DIY Baby Dress Tutorial

Hello everyone! Today, I’ll show you how to make a beautiful shirred back ruffle baby frock step by step. This dress is perfect for babies, featuring a stylish ruffled front and a comfortable shirred back. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Materials Needed
• Soft fabric (cotton or satin)
• Elastic thread for shirring
• Matching thread
• Scissors & measuring tape
• Sewing machine
• Buttons

Step 2: Taking Measurements
1. Measure the chest, waist, length of the frock, and shoulder strap length.
2. Add 1-inch seam allowance to all measurements.

Step 3: Cutting the Fabric
1. Bodice:
• Cut two rectangles for the front and back bodice.
• For the front bodice, cut an extra ruffle piece.
• For the back bodice, leave extra width for shirring.
2. Skirt Part:
• Cut a wide rectangle (double the chest width) for a gathered look.
• Cut an extra strip for the bottom ruffle.
3. Straps:
• Cut two fabric strips (width: 1.5 inches, length as per measurement).

Step 4: Stitching the Bodice
1. Front Bodice:
• Attach the ruffle piece to the top front bodice and stitch along the edge.
2. Back Bodice - Shirring:
• Wind elastic thread in the bobbin and sew parallel lines (¼ inch apart).
• The fabric will gather to create a stretchy effect.

Step 5: Attaching the Skirt
1. Gather the skirt’s top edge by running a loose stitch and pulling the thread.
2. Attach the gathered skirt to the bodice and stitch the side seams.

Step 6: Adding Straps & Finishing
1. Sew the straps onto the bodice and secure them with buttons.
2. Hem the bottom ruffle for a neat finish.
3. Iron the dress for a polished look.
