The Linux Society had their first ever installment of presentations in Term 3, 2025. This event aims to give our members a platform to show off what they're interested in, their contributions, current projects, and technical talks like these!
Pitch:
Sampling from probability distributions is a problem that has tormented the greatest minds of computer science for years. We now ask the questions: what happens if instead of defining the distribution itself, we instead define a set of rules describing how the distribution changes each time we sample from it? This talk will be an introduction to the algorithmic applications of Markov chains, how to reason about them, and some of my (sort of novel?) research into empirical analysis of graph k-colouring sampling.
