The mother carried her baby on her back to work in a cornfield for another family. When the job was done, she happily received her small wage. With that money, together with the little she had saved, she walked more than 5 kilometers to buy a mat and a cooking pot.
On the way back, she took the same long road in reverse. Arriving home, she gently put her child down, sweat soaking her back. Yet, she had no thought of resting. Instead, she went straight to the stove to cook porridge for her baby. When the hot bowl was ready, she served her child first, keeping only the leftovers for herself.
After easing the hunger in her own stomach, she continued to cut bamboo and weave it into a kitchen shelf. The baby, full and content, no longer fussed, but sat quietly, waiting for the mother to finish her work.
