Hello, this video was inspired by BILLYBADBRAKES' listing of 'The Top 25 British Punk Bands of the 70s' but however you have arrived here, thanks for dropping in. His video includes many of the big names of the period so you won't find the likes of the Pistols, Clash and Damned here. What you will find is something different ... some OTHER great British music from that period, maybe some old favourites, maybe some things that are new to you. The song choices aren't always the obvious, and there are alternate versions and live video mixed in there.
Is it all 'punk'? Well, you'll find some bands here that are often categorised as 'new wave' or 'post-punk', but whatever label you want to use, I hope the music in the video has the spirit of the era. It's what the bands were doing at the time, regardless of whatever they became. Having said that, there are bands who I still love but didn't get in because none of their stuff was punk-y enough (sorry XTC).
Some are in there because I felt they 'should be', but most are bands I like so perfectly fair to accuse me of bias -- guilty. I was a student in Liverpool from 1975-79 so there's probably a bit of northern favouritism going on too. There were many I considered but didn't make the cut for whatever reason, so plenty of scope to be inspired like I was and make your own video. Or maybe they are in BILLYBADBRAKES' video -- it's great, have a look if you haven't seen it already.
So, what's number 1 then? Ah ... they're in alphabetic order.
Oh, come on, no Top Of The Pops? My theory here is that you will just listen to the music and not be concerned that a band is 17th when surely it should be 11th.
Where's the list of what's in there? Well ... where's the thrill of discovery if I do that?! I may rethink this though. There's a running title under each one if you need to do a bit of skipping. If you're looking for someone in particular, it's alphabetic, remember.
And why is it so long? Yes, some of the songs go on a bit compared to most compilations - notably, the very first video. Each song is typically about a minute rather than just a quick chorus, and I'm hoping that the music is more enjoyable that way. Fingers crossed that it's (just under) 30 minutes well spent for you.
All of the music was recorded between 1976-79, even though a few of the bands weren't best known until after then. Not all of the images are from the 70's though. If you're the copyright owner for any of it and don't want me to use it, just let me know. This my first effort at something like this and I don't want to upset anyone or YouTube!
Crikey, you read all the way down here ... hope you enjoy it.
