Have you ever sat in church and wondered what things cost? The pews might be old, but it still costs something to have them made. Hymnals, tables, pulpits, and baptistries, they all come at a price.
This is a question many people don’t even consider asking themselves or their church. Every Sunday millions of people walk into a church building and don’t wonder what their pastor is being paid, what the staff is being paid, and where their tithe is going.
In my estimation there are three worthy causes to spend money in the religious sphere.
For the honor and worship of God.
For Charity
For Bills (Paying staff, lights, water bill, maintenance, mortgage)
With these three things in mind, it’s a great blessing to be able to support your local congregation. But I encourage you: if you are attending any sizable church (more than 500 in attendance), you should be wondering what your church is spending money on.
This kind of question isn’t without warrant. I’m not wanting you to be suspicious for no reason. It seems that more often than not, mega church leaders are caught mismanaging the finances of the church. Even in my own city there has been an extreme scandal. In 2006 Ted Haggard (the pastor of new life) was accused by a male prostitute of having paid him for sex for three years. Allegedly the Male prostitute came forward after seeing Ted preach against homosexuality on TV. After the church fired Ted, they then paid money to another man in the church to keep quiet about his own inappropriate relationship with Ted Haggard.
It’s fair to say that in a mega church, you may not have the slightest clue of what your tithe is being used for!
I’ve never been a part of a mega church, every church I've been a part of has not had deep pockets. But for years my news feeds, and reel feeds have been filled with videos of evangelical ministers abusing money for cheap antics to entertain people. It really leaves me wondering….
Are these church members looking at their tithes as admissions to a fun show? Or do they really expect that when they give, their money is being used for the mission of the church - to reach the lost?
Today I would like to go over several instances of extreme financial abuse that a particular brandishes proudly. I would like to take a guess at how severe the financial abuse is, and determine how many sandwiches could have been given to the homeless in exchange for a pastor, or church’s expensive antics. - ED YOUNG
