On the evening of January 2, 1864 in Dalton, Georgia, Confederate Generals Patrick Cleburne and William J. Hardee share a proposal with Joseph E. Johnston and other members of Confederate command. The proposal was simple: Offer slaves in the South their freedom in return for immediate military service in the Confederate Army.
