While HBO Max has made some incredible TV series, that doesn’t stop viewers from seemingly forgetting all about shows like The Sex Lives of College Girls and Pretty Little Liars only moments after they arrive on the streaming service. HBO Max is one of the many streaming services that strive to constantly offer viewers something new. Of course, this isn’t always a good approach. When a streaming service throws too much new content at viewers too quickly, perfectly good shows can get lost in the cracks. Just look at Netflix’s best forgotten thriller shows, which includes critically acclaimed hits with major stars like Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. Even Netflix’s crime thriller Ripley, which was adored by critics and led by A-list star Andrew Scott, failed to get its flowers when the show was swiftly forgotten after its April 2024 release. This fate has befallen plenty of offerings from Apple TV, Paramount+, and Prime Video, too, and this list proves that HBO Max’s offerings aren’t immune to the same fate. HBO Max has green lit a wide variety of shows since the streaming service was launched, and some have been massive successes. Others were critical catastrophes, but the ones that are most intriguing are the titles listed here. These shows were great, whether critics agreed at the time or not, but they never received the attention they deserved despite their quality. Hacks Following Jean Smart’s veteran standup Deborah Vance and her eager protégé Ava Daniels, played by Hannah Einbinder, Hacks is a show business satire that nails a difficult balance successfully with each passing season. Neither as smug and lightweight as Entourage nor as dark as BoJack Horseman, the series satirizes the entertainment business without getting too heavy for its own good. Smart and Einbinder’s stellar central performances elevate each season of Hacks, although the show’s plentiful cameos from real-life comedians don’t hurt one bit. As superstar comedians like Margaret Cho, Patton Oswalt, Jimmy Kimmel, and Rosie O’Donnell appear to spoof their public personae, recurring guest stars like Laurie Metcalf, Kaitlin Olson, and Christopher Lloyd give the show a stacked cast.
