This is a recording of the CHIA webinar presented on 11/12/15 by Michelle A. Scott, RN. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is one of the primary language accommodation mandates with which healthcare organizations must comply in order to reduce liability and improve patient care. It is critical, therefore, for medical interpreters and managers of interpreting agencies/departments to understand how to support compliance. This presentation breaks down the various components of Title VI as it applies to medical interpreters and healthcare language access. The concepts of "covered entity," "federal financial assistance," and "LEP" are discussed in detail. Policies and procedures specific to interpreting are covered, including staffing, interpreter competence, and the use of family/friends to interpret. In addition, we will touch on the other tenets of Title VI compliance: translation of written materials, providing notice to LEP persons, staff training, program monitoring, and the complaint process. "Real world" examples allow participants to actively participate in concept review during the training. Interpreters are encouraged to consider how Title VI applies to the traditional "conduit" and "advocacy" roles. Go to www.chiaonline.org for more information about CHIA and upcoming webinars!
