Remember when everyone was talking about Ketel Marte to the Blue Jays? When it seemed like the perfect fit - Toronto needed a second baseman, Arizona was open to moving pieces, and Marte checked every box? Well, that trade is DEAD. Completely dead. And I need to break down why this fell apart and what it means for Toronto's offseason because this could be a MASSIVE missed opportunity.
In this video, I'm examining how the Blue Jays let one of the most underrated players in baseball slip through their fingers. Ketel Marte is a switch-hitting second baseman who can also play center field, hits for average AND power, gets on base, plays solid defense. He's basically everything you want in a middle infielder. The Diamondbacks made the World Series in 2023, have been rumored to be open to moving him for the right offer, have financial constraints and need to reload their farm system. On PAPER, this should have been a perfect match for Toronto.
The Blue Jays need middle infield help, especially if Bo Bichette walks. They need versatile players who can hit. They have prospects to trade. Everything lined up. Reports said Toronto had interest, Arizona was listening, real conversations were happening. Then just like that - it all went COLD. The rumors stopped. The momentum died. This trade feels dead before it ever really got started.
So what happened? I think Toronto got too focused on the Kyle Tucker trade and lost sight of their other needs. They spent all their resources going after Tucker, and by the time that deal was done, they didn't have the bandwidth or assets to also get Marte. That's POOR PLANNING. That's not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time.
Second, Arizona's asking price was probably too high for what Toronto was willing to pay. The Diamondbacks know Marte is valuable - middle infielders who can hit are RARE. They probably wanted one of Toronto's top prospects, maybe multiple, and the Blue Jays balked. They didn't want to gut their farm after already trading for Tucker. So they walked away. Now they're stuck without a clear plan at second base or as a Bo replacement if he leaves.
Here's why this KILLS me: Marte hit .295 last year with THIRTY-SIX HOME RUNS. From a second baseman. That's ELITE production. He's 31, in his prime, proven, been to the postseason, knows how to perform in big moments. And he can play multiple positions - if Bo stays, Marte plays second; if Bo walks, Marte can shift around. That versatility is incredibly valuable.
But instead of making this happen, the Blue Jays just let it die. They let the opportunity slip away because they were too focused on other things or too cheap to pay the price. Now what? Now they go into spring training with question marks at second base and no real backup plan if Bo leaves. That's organizational MALPRACTICE.
Think about this scenario: Blue Jays trade for BOTH Tucker and Marte. Now you've got Tucker in right, Marte at second, and you can let Bo walk without panicking. Your infield is Vlad at first, Marte at second, someone new at short, Chapman at third. That's a really good defensive infield with multiple guys who can hit. You've addressed your needs, got flexibility, not desperately scrambling in free agency. But they DIDN'T DO IT.
Here's the pattern that concerns me: the Blue Jays have a HISTORY of being "in on" players, being rumored for deals, and then ultimately not pulling the trigger. They were in on Ohtani - didn't get him. They've been linked to various free agents and trades over the years, and more often than not, they come up EMPTY. At some point you have to ask if there's a deeper issue - is the front office too conservative? Not willing to pay market price? Do other teams not take them seriously?
And let's be real: Arizona is probably going to trade Marte to somebody else now. Maybe the Astros, maybe the Yankees. Some contender will step up, pay the price, and get a really good player who could help them win a championship. The Blue Jays will be on the outside looking in, wondering why they didn't make it happen when they had the chance.
Here's the worst part: Marte is a SWITCH HITTER. That's HUGE for lineup balance. Toronto is heavily right-handed. Having a switch hitter who produces from both sides gives you so much more flexibility. But Toronto either didn't value that enough or didn't think it was worth the prospect cost.
