New State Office Bldgs 04/08/2025

Here's a bird's eye view tour of the two new state office buildings I've been watching on Topeka Blvd. First up is the Docking Building 2.0. I have been observing and recording the Docking State Office Building Reconstruction in previous AstraLunarDrone videos. The project began in November of 2022 and appears to be very near completion (originally projected to be complete this past April). The design honored the original Docking Building by salvaging and displaying key historic features and carefully preserving and reusing existing materials. At the end of this video I show the relocation of one of the original facade sculptures by artist Bernard "Poco" Frazier by Koch Construction Specialties. Originally named the "Kansas State Office Building," it was built in 1954-1957. My family moved to Topeka in late 1954 when my dad got a job working as a draftsman for Service, Van Doren, and Hazard assigned to building the new Kansas Turnpike, also started in 1954. Once we were settled, my mom got a job in Data Entry at the new State Office Building.

Next up on this aerial tour is the recently completed Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Laboratory which is replacing the current laboratory located at the Topeka Regional Airport (Forbes).
