STEP BY STEP GUIDE
How to find a hidden trash or bin folder in Gmail
STEP 1
It’s worth noting that before we dive into how to find your deleted items folder - depending on the version of Gmail you are using the deleted emails folder may be called either trash or bin.
STEP 2
Depending on how many labels you have in Gmail you may need to expand the label list to see the bin folder
You can do this by clicking on the More link in the left hand panel
This will increase the list of displayed labels
And the Gmail bin folder should then be displayed.
STEP 3
If the bin folder still isn’t displayed you can use
Search keywords to display all the emails that are in your bin folder
Keywords are commands that you can type directly into the Gmail search bar to filter emails straight from your inbox
To do this, let’s click into the email search bar
And I’ll type the Gmail search keyword IN
followed by the label name trash (In:trash) - this will show all the emails that have been added to to the bin label
Rather confusingly it doesn’t matter if your Gmail deleted items folder is called bin or trash , you must use the trash keyword to show your deleted emails.
STEP 4
If you would prefer to see the bin or trash folder in the main list of labels in Gmail, there is one final fix you can make but to do this you need to go into the settings in Gmail
To do that, I’ll start by moving my mouse to the top right of Gmail and I’ll click on the gear settings icon - this opens up Gmail’s quick settings options.
We want to dive into the detailed settings however so to do that I’m going to click on the ‘See all settings’ button.
STEP 5
So, the General Tab in settings is opened by default
But we’re interested in the Labels tab next to it
Let’s click into that now.
STEP 6
This page contains a full list of all the labels that have been created in Gmail
If I look a little way down the page, you’ll see that the bin label
Is currently set to hide
If I click on the blue show link
Gmail confirms that the bin label is now shown in the label list
And most importantly, the bin folder is displayed near the top of the left hand panel.
If I click into that, all of the emails that have been moved to the bin folder are shown.
