Stefanos Tsitsipas Reveals He Considered Retirement After Battling Chronic Back Injury
Former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas has opened up about one of the most difficult periods of his career, admitting he seriously considered retiring from tennis after struggling with severe back pain throughout the 2025 season.
Now aged 27, the Greek star is set to begin his 2026 season representing Greece at the United Cup in Perth, Australia, but his return follows months of uncertainty about whether his body could withstand professional tennis.
Tsitsipas revealed that his biggest fear was not losing matches, but whether he could physically finish them.
“My biggest concern has been, can I actually finish a match? That was what was going through my mind the last six to eight months,” Tsitsipas said. “I was constantly thinking, ‘If I win a match, will I be able to come back the next day and play another match without pain?’”
The situation worsened after his US Open loss to Daniel Altmaier, a moment Tsitsipas described as frightening.
“I got really scared after my US Open loss because I just couldn’t walk for two days. When things like that happen, you start reconsidering the future of your career.”
When asked directly if retirement crossed his mind, Tsitsipas did not hesitate.
“There were phases during the year where I was asking myself, ‘Why am I doing this? Why am I putting myself through so much pain?’ Pain is not enjoyable when you’re an athlete, especially when it keeps coming back.”
He admitted that his long-term happiness and health nearly outweighed his love for the sport.
“It’s much more important to be happy and pain-free than struggling through the sport I love with pain. I’d rather put an end to it than constantly suffer.”
Currently ranked world No. 36, Tsitsipas will open his 2026 campaign against Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki on January 2 at the United Cup. Greece has also been drawn in the same group as Great Britain, with matches split between Perth and Sydney from January 2–11, one week before the Australian Open.
