Rob Thomas: How He Wrote the #3 Most Successful Song Of All Time | Matchbox Twenty | Guy Raz

Musician Rob Thomas sits down with Guy and shares the story of his remarkable rise to rock superstardom. After a childhood marked by addiction and little adult supervision, Rob nearly joined the army before forming Matchbox Twenty in Orlando, Florida.

But the band didn’t find immediate success. In fact, Rob says they were playing shows to “10 people” and were in danger of being dropped when a radio DJ helped them break through.

In this conversation, Rob opens up about the dizzying heights he and the band reached in the 90s, the inspiration behind the mega-hit “Smooth” with Carlos Santana; how he dealt with critics that called Matchbox “uncool”; how he’s found deep happiness in his marriage and family life; and why the band still gets along so well after nearly 30 years together.

📖 Rob Thomas is best known as the frontman and songwriter for rock band Matchbox Twenty. He initially dropped out of high school and considered joining the army before forming Matchbox Twenty with some friends in Orlando, Florida. They quickly were offered a record deal, but the very day they released their debut album, the label went bust and they only sold 600 copies.

In this episode, Rob talks with Guy about the “guerrilla marketing” he used to get his music on the radio as a young musician, writing Matchbox Twenty's hit song "3AM", joining forces with Carlos Santana on "Smooth,” and much more.
