Recently, with the proliferation of variable font technology, CJK fonts have begun to explore new and more flexible designs. However, due to historical limitations in the font tools, the font format definitions and conventions, and in how text engines support non-Latin scripts, there are significant challenges and an opportunity to declare a path forward. This talk will show some key examples of how a text engine can solve these problems, and some important considerations for font makers, font users, and text layout engine developers when dealing with non-square CJK fonts.
