This female baby elephant (Little Straw) was very reluctant to follow the mother into the water at the bridge over the Olifants river in the Kruger National Park and turned back a couple of times. First she had to negotiate over a bank of rocks. The movement of the trunk shows it all, the body language, she also tried to occupy her mind elsewhere, at some point in time she chase an African Pied Wagtail away.
But all was a learning curve of nature the mother introduced her to under her watchful eye. It was not long before another mother with a somewhat bigger calf came along, whereafter the little one was prompt to follow the mother. Watch how Little Straw (Strooitjie) picks up her feet, lifting her tail, not very happy at first, but then later on the confidence grows and one can see she is enjoying the experience, walking slowly, feeling the water with her feet.
And then on arriving at the island, a sandbank with stands of commom reed (fluitjiesriet), she was in full controll of her little straw .... exploring ....
