Namco's arcade racer from 1993, ended up bridging the racing gap in arcades between SEGA's hugely arcade hits that were Virtua Racing and Daytona USA. Becoming a hugely successful racing game in its own right. Pretty much every 80's & 90's arcade game used bright, vibrant and bold colours to both attract players and so you could see the screen in dimly lit arcades. Ridge Racer was no exception with the game looking like you were driving around the sunny Bahamas. Ridge Racer was a fairly straight forward single player arcade racer with only one track that had two versions to race on the harder version had an additional section at the end. One feature of Ridge Racer that often gets overlooked is the changing time of day as you race, it helps to add a sense of endurance to each race and really adds to the experience when playing it. Interestingly SEGA on the other hand never did anything quite like that in arcade racers.
The main gameplay of Ridge Racer which would become a staple of the series is corner drifting. The speed and angle you start the drift at decides the turn angle and how you glide / float around turnings. As you learn each corner you discover that the perfect angle will allow you to maintain your speed with little lost. Certain corners will also trigger the announcer to say something if you get the turn just right as will getting a perfect start. Strangely the announcer calls aren't present on Novice and they only happen on certain turns also.
As an arcade game Ridge Racer was a very good game, but not quite as great as Daytona USA was. There were multiple arcade cabinet versions of the game, including a three screened cabinet and the huge full scale version. Which had you sitting in a replica car against three large screens, sadly that version to date has not been correctly emulated.
While Ridge Racer ultimately got blown out of the water by Daytona USA in the arcades, it got its own back when it came to the home ports. As given the game was both smaller in size and had weaker graphics meant the game was easier to port to the Sony PlayStation. SEGA on the other hand infamously rushed the SEGA Saturn port of Daytona USA, which would be one of the many own goals they would score against themselves during the 90s. The home port of Ridge Racer ended up selling 1.4 million copies and was seen as a far closer port to the arcade original, even if it still wasn't perfect. Helping Sony win the first blow against SEGA in the mid 90s console war.
