このカメラは1930年から1933年の間に作られたBEAU BROWNIEと名付けられた120フィルムを使う箱型カメラのブラウニーNo.2です。ボウ(Beau)とはフランス語を起源とする「ハンサムな若者」という意味のようですが、一般にこのカメラの装飾的デザインから、アールデコと呼ばれています。このカメラが作られた1930年のアメリカはアールデコと呼ばれる芸術ブームが大いに花開いていました。ニューヨークのマンハッタンにあるクライスラービルやエンパイヤステートビル、あるいはオリエント急行の客車内装飾のアールデコが有名です。アールデコとは、19世紀末ころからヨーロッパで一大ブームとなったアールヌーボ(Art Nouveau)という芸術運動を受けて、1900年から1940年にかけてヨーロッパからアメリカに展開した芸術運動でした。アールヌーボはフランス語で「新しい芸術」という意味で、人々の生活の中に草や花、昆虫や魚などをモティーフとした装飾を持ち込み、家具や小物そして邸宅のデザインに使われて、自然に包まれた豊かな生活を演出したのです。この芸術運動はフランスのパリでは1800年の後半にジャポニズムと呼ばれる一大日本ブームがおきていたのですに触発されているといわれています。しかしながら、人々は精緻な手作りのアールヌーボ装飾の魅せられながらも機械で大量生産できるような装飾的作品も志向していたのです。今でいう工業デザインへ向かう芸術運動が始まったのです。それがアールデコと呼ばれる装飾的な芸術です。他の言い方ではモダンデザインの始まりです。それは複雑な曲線より垂直線や水平線の意匠が好まれました。なぜなら工場で製品化が容易だったからです。この意匠は、日本の桂離宮を見れば理解できるように、日本の建築デザインにおいても馴染みのある内容でした。さて、このカメラの正面は縦横の白い細い直線で区切られ黒と濃い紫色に色分けされた区域を様々な広さの領域を組み合わせています。これは、同時代のオランダ出身の抽象画家ピート・モンドリアンのコンポジションという作品によく似ています。彼もアールデコ時代の代表的芸術家といえます。さて、コダック社は1930年頃からウオルター・ドールウィン・ティーグ(Walter Dorwin Teague)というデザイナーと契約を結び、このボウ・ブラウニー(Beau Brownie)を製作したといわれています。彼は、ジェット旅客機ボーイングのデザイナーとしても有名だそうです。
さてカメラの特徴を述べます。
カメラの名称はBeau Brownie, 正式にはBrownie No.2、通称はアールデコ。フィルムは120型。レンズはダブレット(Doublet)型。シャッターはロータリ(Rotary)型で、スピードは1/25秒に固定。バルブ(Bulb)の設定が可能。絞りは大中小の３段階（16,22,32との説がある）切り替え。フォーカスは固定。またレンズの特徴から、カメラ長は短く、全体的に小型のBrownieとなっていて、ベビー・ブラウニーとも呼ばれる。動画で紹介しているカメラは黒が主体であるけれど、茶系、青系、緑系、ピンク系がある。さらに、No.2Aのモデルも知られている。

Introducing Kodak Brownie No. 2, Art Deco, a representative Art Deco box camera in the United States

This camera is the Brownie No. 2 box camera that uses 120 film named BEAU BROWNIE, made between 1930 and 1933. Beau seems to mean a "handsome young man" of French origin, but is commonly referred to as Art Deco because of the decorative design of this camera. In the United States in 1930, when this camera was made, an art boom called Art Deco was in full bloom. The Chrysler Building and Empire State Building in Manhattan, New York, or the Art Deco interior decoration of the Orient Express are famous. Art Deco was an art movement that developed from Europe to the United States from 1900 to 1940 in response to the art movement called Art Nouveau, which became a big boom in Europe from the end of the 19th century. Art Nouveau, which means "new art" in French, brings grass, flowers, insects, fish and other motifs into people's lives, and is used in furniture, accessories and mansion design, and is naturally wrapped. It produced a rich life. This art movement is said to have been inspired by the great Japanese boom called Japonism in the latter half of 1800 in Paris, France. However, people were also looking for decorative works that could be mass-produced by machine while being fascinated by the elaborate handmade Art Nouveau decorations. The art movement towards what is now called industrial design has begun. That is the decorative art called Art Deco. In other words, it's the beginning of modern design. It preferred vertical and horizontal designs to complex curves. Because it was easy to commercialize at the factory. This design was familiar to Japanese architectural design, as you can see from the Katsura Imperial Villa in Japan. Now, the front of this camera is divided by thin straight white lines in vertical and horizontal directions, and the areas colored in black and deep purple are combined with areas of various sizes. This is very similar to the work of contemporary Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian's composition. He is also a representative artist of the Art Deco era. By the way, Kodak is said to have signed a contract with a designer named Walter Dorwin Teague from around 1930 to produce this Beau Brownie. He is also famous as a designer of the jet airliner Boeing.
