The composition of Ligeti's Piano Concerto was protracted, the earliest sketches beginning in 1980. The first page went through 21 drafts, and he found the original three-movement work not to end satisfactorily, so added two more. The work shares with the Piano Études superimposed African rhythms, shifting accents, and changing tempos.
