There are many different kinds of workplace discrimination that are illegal. Generally, it's referred to an adverse employment action, so whatever rises to that level. If your employer has taken an adverse employment action against you because of your race or because of your gender, that's illegal. Some common examples are, let's say they fire you, or they demote you. Those are pretty clear cut examples of something that would be illegal. There can also be occasions where more subtle forms of discrimination can still count as an illegal adverse employment action, such as, lowering your performance evaluation or maybe just a small decrease in your pay. In certain circumstances, those can still be illegal discrimination.
