I must have had the Panmure 8 manuscript for some 30 years, and now that I have the right instrument for it - a 12-course lute - I've enjoyed getting to know it. These pieces are not an "official' Suite in Gm, just a few I've drawn together from the 100 or so pieces in the manuscript. None of them have titles, so there's an element of conjecture there. One of the pieces is know from elsewhere: the Point d'Orgue by François Dufaut, one of the great French luthistes of the 17th century. The title refers to a technique organists would use, having a low long-held note with changing harmonies above. The B section of the piece only has one low bass note or pedal, the 10th course D, until the last bar where it resolves to the tonic G. The sarabande reminds us that historically it started as a fast dance, and is great fun to play, despite its brevity.
