Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata D.960 in B-flat major has one of his most incredible slow movements that almost seems like his personal farewell to music and life. The music is hauntingly introspective and Schubert's lyricism is present throughout. (interestingly enough, the opening theme never leaps more than a minor 3rd and its ambitus incredibly restrained) The "heartbeat" ostinato in the left hand is a key feature of this movement that serves as pulsation but also the filler rhythm to the melody that plays mostly on the first and last beat of each bar.
