يسلط المعرض الضوء على تطور المجموعة السريالية المصرية وعلاقتها مع نظرائها الغربيين والدوليين، موثقاً فصلا من الحداثة في مصر يمتد من أواخر الثلاثينيات إلى أوائل الستينيات من القرن العشرين. تم جمع أكثر من ١٥٠ عمل من مؤسسات مصرية عامة وخاصة ومقتني فنون مصريين، يعرض الكثير منها لأول مرة.

يبني المعرض على مؤتمر بعنوان "السرياليون المصريون في المنظور العالمي" نظمته مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون بالتعاون مع معهد الحداثة المقارنة في جامعة كورنيل وبرنامج الثقافات البصرية في الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة عام ٢٠١٥.

سيتم بالتوازي مع المعرض نشر مجموعة من المطبوعات مثل الأوراق البحثية التي قدمت في مؤتمر ٢٠١٥، وأعداد من مجلات "التطور" و "النص الآخر"، التي نشرت لأول مرة في أربعينيات القرن العشرين، بالإضافة إلى مجموعة مختارة من المواد الأرشيفية.

When art becomes liberty exhibition

This exhibition focuses on the evolution of the Egyptian Surrealist group and their relationship with their Western and international counterparts, documenting a chapter of modernism in Egypt that spans from the late 1930s to the early 1960s. More than 150 works have been brought together, many for the first time, including substantial loans from Egyptian public and private collections.

The exhibition expands upon a 2015 conference titled “Egyptian Surrealists in Global Perspective,” organized by Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with the Institute for Comparative Modernities at Cornell University and the Visual Cultures Program at the American University in Cairo.

Alongside the exhibition a range of publications will be produced including a collection of the papers presented at the 2015 Surrealists conference, a reprint of journals such as “Al Tatuwur” and “The Other Text,” first published in the 1940s, as well as a selection of other archival material.
