Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UKR) offers a natural-feeling knee, but like any surgical procedure, it carries potential risks. While generally successful, it's important to understand potential complications and their minimization.
Common complications, as documented in medical literature, include arthritis progression in other knee compartments, which can lead to early revision to Total Knee Replacement (TKR). Additionally, tibial bone fractures can occur during preparation for UKR, especially in patients with poor bone quality, potentially necessitating a TKR instead. Infection is another risk, minimized through meticulous patient preparation and sterile operating environments.
Specifically for mobile bearing UKR, plastic insert displacement can lead to early failure. Implant loosening, due to wear and tear or poor bone quality, may also require conversion to TKR.
To minimize these risks, surgeons ensure patient optimization before surgery, employ the best surgical techniques, and adhere to appropriate antibiotic protocols. They are also prepared to manage complications effectively, ensuring the best possible UKR outcomes.
