(14 Aug 2018) Eight days after its birth in captivity, a rare newborn Silvery Gibbon has gone on public display at the Prague Zoo in the Czech Republic.
The birth is the second successful one to parents Alangalang and Flip.
The pair previously gave birth to the first Silvery Gibbon ever born in captivity three years ago.
The gibbons, known for practicing lifelong monogamy and their distinctively small, intense faces, number fewer than 4,000 in the wild.
Vitek Lukas, the curator of primates at Prague Zoo welcomed the new arrival saying it was of critical importance to the breeding programme of the species, which is native to Java in Indonesia.
Typically gibbons live in family groups where the young ones stay with their parents until the age of about six.
For now the baby gibbon remains unnamed until its sex is known.
