One of the key features of Hilbert schemes (and moduli spaces more generally) is the existence of a universal family. This universal family is an extremely useful gadget that comes for free and so underlies the utility of the Hilbert scheme. In this video, we give a quick intro to what it is and how it is useful by giving some simple examples. In particular, we indicate the modern approach to the McKay correspondence by showing how the universal family provides the connection between the minimal resolution of Kleinian singularities and the irreducible representations of the finite group that defines them.
