Vaak honours the legendary GN Balasubramaniam (GNB) on his 60th Remembrance Day

On this solemn and celebratory occasion, we remember and pay tribute to one of Carnatic music’s most revolutionary figures—GNB, whose musical genius forever transformed the landscape of South Indian classical music.

As part of this commemoration, we are proud to present an archival gem: an All India Radio concert of GNB, originally aired on 27th November 1960. This concert captures the brilliance, innovation, and emotive depth that made GNB a towering figure of his time and a continued source of inspiration for generations of musicians and rasikas alike.

Through his lightning-fast brigas, refined aesthetic, and pioneering approach to raga elaboration and composition, GNB shaped the modern sound of Carnatic music and mentored an entire generation of maestros who carried forward his legacy.

The concert features a stellar ensemble: Lalgudi G Jayaraman on the violin, whose sensitive and imaginative accompaniment seamlessly mirrors and complements GNB’s musical ideas, and Coimbatore N Ramaswamy on the mridangam, whose precise and nuanced rhythmic support enhances the concert's dynamic energy. Together, this trio offers a masterclass in collaborative artistry and musical sophistication.
