Creative bookmarks celebrated at Fraser Coast Libraries

Reading wombats, colourful landscapes, and a love of literature were among the winning themes in this year’s Fraser Coast Libraries Design-a-Bookmark competition, with winners officially celebrated at a special presentation this week.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour congratulated the winners across five age categories and the People’s Choice Award, who each received a certificate and a $50 Buy Local gift card.
“This year we received a record 297 entries, up by 40 on last year,” he said. “It’s great to see the growing popularity of the competition, especially in the 60+ category which had a 40% increase in participation.”
Five of the six categories were judged by Regional Arts Development Coordinator Amanda Kratzmann, who praised the creativity and skill on display.
“One of my favourites was the reading wombats in the 18–59 age category – it was both charming and skillfully illustrated,” she said. “The playful book titles added a great sense of humour that invites a closer look and a smile.”
The winners of the 2025 Fraser Coast Libraries’ Design-a-Bookmark Competition are:
• 6 years and under – Evelyn Cousins
• 7 to 11 years – Abigail Piper
• 12 to 17 years – Shay Cornish
• 18 – 59 years – Katie Bell
• 60+ years – Helen Cory
• People’s Choice Award – Neve Barker
Cr Seymour said the People’s Choice Award again drew strong support, with 758 votes submitted by library members selecting their favourite design.
“At just eight years old, Neve Barker’s vibrant and eye-catching bookmark showcasing a passion for books captured the hearts of voters – a perfect theme for a library keepsake,” he said.
“All the entrants should be proud of their work, and we’re pleased to showcase their creativity with all entries on display in our libraries.
“The winning bookmark designs will soon be printed and available for free at all Fraser Coast Libraries.”
Fraser Coast Libraries receive financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland.
