In 1386 Marguerite de Carrouges was attacked by Jaques le Gris, a friend of her family and squire in service to her lord Pierre of Alencon. Unable to bring charges against le Gris herself Marguerite asked her husband, Jean de Carrouges, to seek justice on her behalf. With no other recourse Jean challenged le Gris to a judicial duel, a fight to the death where it was believed that god would be the ultimate judge. This is the story of the last judicial duel in French history.
