KEF was founded in 1961 by former BBC engineer Raymond Cooke in a small shed by the River Medway in Kent. From the outset, the brand aimed to merge engineering precision with acoustic excellence, drawing on Cooke’s background in broadcast audio and his desire to rethink loudspeaker design.
Early on, KEF gained a reputation for technical innovation by being one of the first to adopt computer modelling in speaker development. This commitment to research and precision helped the brand quickly establish itself as a leader in British HiFi.
In the 1960s, models like the Celeste and Cresta made their mark, but it was the Reference Series that truly elevated KEF to professional and studio-grade recognition. A defining moment came with the introduction of the Uni-Q driver array — a coaxial design placing the tweeter in the acoustic centre of the midrange cone. This allowed for more accurate sound dispersion and greater detail across the listening area, becoming a cornerstone of KEF’s engineering philosophy.
As HiFi evolved, KEF adapted. The LS series, launched in 2012 for the company’s 50th anniversary, distilled the Reference Series’ DNA into a more compact form. The LS50 quickly earned acclaim for its clarity, imaging, and tight bass, becoming a benchmark in the bookshelf category.
Building on that success, KEF introduced the LS50 Wireless, followed by the LS50 Wireless II — a fully active, streaming-ready system. Featuring the latest Uni-Q driver with Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) to reduce distortion, each speaker includes a dedicated DAC and amplifier (280 watts per channel), removing the need for external components. With HDMI eARC, optical, coaxial, analog, and network inputs, it functions as a complete high-end system in a compact footprint.
For those looking for something smaller, KEF developed the LSX and, later, the LSX II. These retain the wireless functionality and signature Uni-Q design but in a more compact two-way configuration. Despite their size, they deliver impressive stereo imaging and detail.
Across six decades, KEF has remained one of the few HiFi brands that continues to innovate without compromising on sound. At The Revolver Club, KEF speakers play an important role in our ez-fi lineup. ez-fi addresses the New Age customer through curated plug-and-play solutions, ensuring that experiencing great sound is accessible to anyone who values music, film, and immersive audio at its best.
With built-in amplification and wireless streaming, models like the LS50 Wireless II and LSX II offer high-performance audio without the clutter of separate components — a perfect match for modern spaces and simplified setups.
