The dark season is here - Rural cabin renovation in Finland

What a ride these thresholds have been. I hope that whenever we get to move in here and walk over them, I will remember to appreciate all the effort that went into getting them built. I never knew how such tiny things could require so much brainwork! That's not something a rookie would include in the time estimates of a renovation.

The roof renovation this summer left us with a bigger mess to sort out than what we had expected; probably two tonnes of old asphalt, and about 300 square meters of roof shingles, in four layers. We'll take the asphalt to the recycling center, but we don't want to pay the recycling fees for the wooden roof shingles. We could have just left them to decompose on the field, but they have small nails in them, so that sounded like a poor idea. I don't want to find rusty nails on the soles of my feet nor in the potatoes I wish to grow here one day, so we decided to burn them to get rid of them. What a waste, literally.

But the open fire on a dark night felt like a nice ritual after the roof renovation. I hope all the worry and stress the bad roof caused us are now disappearing into thin air with the dark smoke rising from the shingles.
