As far as I'm concerned, the jazz event of the year was the 100th birthday celebration of the great Terry Gibbs at his home in Sherman Oaks (10/13/2024). One of the most beloved men in jazz was flooded with appreciation by scores of colleagues spanning eight decades. Bravo and brava to Terry's kids, drummer Gerry Gibbs and Jerra Ann Gibbs, for giving their dad (and all of us who attended) an unforgettable celebration of the man who has devoted his life to making people feel good. The centerpiece of the afternoon was a performance by Chuck Redd (playing Terry's vibes), guitarist Larry Koonse, saxophonists Chuck Manning and Doug Webb, bassist Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gerry Gibbs and Kevin van den Elzen, and various singers. Later we gathered in the living room to watch this lengthy video of tributes to Terry by dozens of luminaries, friends and relatives; Gerry busted his ass to get them. Terry is doing great and going strong, and I urge you to tune into his weekly Saturday Facebook Live Q&A session (1pm PST, linked on his FB page) and ask him any question you want. While you're at it, check out Terry's wonderful new release, "Terry Gibbs Dream Band – Vol. 7: The Lost Tapes, 1959" (from Whaling City Sound), the latest reminder of one of the most swinging big bands in jazz history.
