Paul Lewis, Professor of Architecture, presented “Buildings from Plants: Architecture and Embodied Carbon.” Lewis was the third speaker in the spring 2023 HMEI Faculty Seminar Series.
Buildings are responsible for a large percentage of global carbon emissions, and the carbon expended to make buildings is substantial yet under considered. Arguing that the most viable means to radically reduce embodied carbon in new buildings is to use plant and earth based materials, Lewis talked about how this approach can be a catalyst for new types of architecture that reduce or sequester carbon, engage regenerative life cycles and create healthier spaces for living.
