The festival's origin lies in the divine intervention of Lord Krishna. When the residents of Vrindavan prepared to perform a traditional sacrifice to Lord Indra, the deity of rain and storms, young Krishna persuaded them to instead worship Govardhan Hill and the cows, which were the true sources of their sustenance and livelihood. This act was meant to shift their devotion from blind ritualism to a profound appreciation for what truly sustained them.

The primary reason for its continued observance is to commemorate Lord Krishna's miraculous act of protection. Enraged by the cessation of his worship, an arrogant Lord Indra unleashed seven days and nights of torrential rains and devastating storms upon Vrindavan. To shield the entire community—including people and cattle—from this deluge, Lord Krishna effortlessly lifted the colossal Govardhan Hill on his little finger, holding it aloft like a massive umbrella. This divine feat forced Indra to realize Krishna's supremacy and surrender his pride. Therefore, the celebration is an annual reminder of the victory of genuine devotion and humility over ego and showcases the power of a deep, singular faith in the Divine Protector, or Giridhari (the lifter of the hill).

Today, Govardhan Puja holds immense cultural and spiritual significance, particularly among Vaishnava devotees. It emphasizes the principle of environmental stewardship and the interconnectedness of human life with nature. The central ritual involves preparing the Chappan Bhog, or 56 varieties of vegetarian dishes, which are artfully arranged in a mound to represent the Govardhan Hill. This grand offering, the Annakut, symbolizes gratitude for the earth’s bounty and is later distributed as prasada (sanctified food) to the entire community, fostering a powerful sense of unity and shared blessing.
