Descale and Sterilize the whole RV System
Tips on descaling and sanitizing
On Demand Water Heater, Faucets, washer or dishwasher
Run through all devices, faucets using hot water
You should leave a vinegar solution in an RV's on-demand water heater for 45 to 60 minutes, circulating it with a pump to break down mineral deposits. After the circulation time, drain the vinegar solution and thoroughly flush the system with fresh water for at least 10 minutes to remove any residual vinegar before using the water heater again.
Step-by-step descaling with vinegar:
Prepare the solution: Mix distilled white vinegar (about 4 gallons) with water in a bucket.
Set up the circulation: Disconnect the water heater's inlet and outlet hoses and place them in the bucket. Insert a submersible pump into the bucket and connect the output hose to the water heater's cold water inlet.
Circulate the vinegar: Turn on the pump to circulate the vinegar solution through the water heater for 45 to 60 minutes.
Drain the solution: After the circulation time, turn off the pump and drain the vinegar from the water heater.
Flush with fresh water: Connect the water heater back to the RV's water supply and run fresh water through it for a minimum of 10 minutes to thoroughly rinse the system.
Full system descale plus tank water heater
You should leave a 50/50 vinegar and water solution in your RV's water system, including the fresh water tank and lines, for at least five to ten hours, or even overnight, to allow the acidic solution to effectively break down mineral deposits and descale the system. For the water heater, you can heat the solution with the element and let it sit for several hours, while for the entire system, you'll need to drain and refill the tanks multiple times.
For Descaling the Entire System (Fresh Water Tank & Lines)
Mix the solution: Create a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water.
Fill the tank: Pump this mixture into your RV's fresh water tank.
Distribute the solution: Turn on the water pump and open each faucet in your RV (hot and cold) until you smell vinegar coming out, which indicates the solution has reached the lines.
Let it sit: Turn off the water pump and leave the solution to sit in the tank and lines for at least five to ten hours to allow it to dissolve mineral buildup.
For Descaling the Water Heater Tank
Drain and fill: Drain your water heater tank and refill it with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution using your RV's 12-volt pump.
Heat and soak: Turn on the water heater's electrical element to warm the solution, but ensure the power is off for the element after it's warm.
Wait: Let the hot, acidic solution sit in the water heater tank for about four to five hours to allow it to effectively break down any scale.
After the Soak
Drain: Open the drain valve to empty the vinegar solution from the tank.
Rinse: Flush the system thoroughly with fresh water to remove any residual vinegar and loosened scale.
Inspect: Use a flashlight to inspect the tank for any remaining buildup and repeat the process if necessary.
