I love my volunteer radio show at KDHX. Having the opportunity to come to a beautiful building each Sunday and share my work with all of you is like medicine for my jazz loving soul.
Not only do all of our volunteers have great shows in their own perspective genres, KDHX also offers up historic information about our city some of us would never have thought about, but straight up fascinating just the same.
My colleague who follows me on Sunday night was not physically at the station this past Sunday, he was at the Rolling Stones concert, a great excuse to be absent I would say. So, because of that, before I left, I had to make sure Hound Dog's pre-recorded show was running smoothly.
Each show host have at least 3 minutes to take their place at the control board when exchanging shifts, so since there would be no physical shift change, I was able to sit and listen to the historical three minute vignette that aired before the midnight show began. It was fascinating…all about “Lustron” houses. As I continued to listen to this beautiful piece of St. Louis history from historian Andrew Wanko, who does the reporting for the Missouri Historical Society, I couldn’t wait to find out what these houses actually looked like especially when he said only a small amount still exist today.
So, when I got home after eating the wonderful meal my husband Jeff always have prepared for me ( another perk my jazz show brings every Sunday), I went straight to the google machine to see for myself what these houses looked like. I could tell right away that I must have been in one of them somewhere in my lifetime.
Now in the future as I drive down the streets of St. Louis and happen to spot one of these cute little houses made of steel, I’m sure they will look quite different to me, now that I know the history of the Lustron houses.
I gathered up a few photos and attached Mr. Wanko’s great narration of the story and made a video for all of you to see. Now, you know. Enjoy.
R.S.V.P (rare songs, verypersonal)
