"Belfast" Star Caitríona Balfe on Motherhood, Directing "Outlander" & Jamie Dornan's Singing

"Outlander" star Caitríona Balfe exclusively spoke to SheKnows' Reshma Gopaldas about her new film "Belfast," which co-stars Jamie Dornan ("The Fall," "Fifty Shades of Grey") Jude Hill, Ciarán Hinds, and Judi Dench and is directed by Kenneth Branagh. Balfe tells us who inspired her performance as Branagh's "Ma." Plus, she confessed she was equal parts terrified and awestruck to act with Judi Dench and dance with Jamie Dornan. She also says how life with a newborn baby has changed things, and how she was so happy her own mother came to her first premiere and saw "Belfast." And finally, she tells us whether she will be directing on her show, "Outlander." Balfe and co-star Sam Heughan have played Claire and Jamie Fraser for five seasons on the Starz drama. "Outlander" season 6 premieres in early 2022, and they have been renewed for a seventh season, which goes back into production in 2022 as well.

We reveal that Kenneth Branagh thought she was a better dance than Jamie Dornan. Balfe says she was surprised, but when asked if she or Dornan are the better singer, she quickly says Dornan. Jamie Dornan sings "Everlasting Love," in the film.

In "Belfast," Caitríona Balfe plays a strong, fierce mom who is at the center of a heartwarming story about a family in Northern Island in the 1960s at a time of conflict and violence. The film is based on Kenneth Branagh’s childhood, and his parents are played by Balfe and Jamie Dornan. In real life, Balfe just became a mother herself, welcoming a son in August.
