In 1964, Dhanushkodi was devastated by a massive cyclone, which destroyed much of the town and led to the abandonment of the area. It’s now referred to as a "ghost town," with ruins that add to its haunting beauty.
Today, Dhanushkodi is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful, serene beaches and the remnants of old buildings, including a church, railway station, post office, and various structures left from the pre-cyclone days.

During British colonial rule in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Dhanushkodi developed as a bustling port town. It served as an important link for travel and trade between India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Ferries operated from Dhanushkodi to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, facilitating transport of people and goods across the Palk Strait.
The town had facilities like a railway station, post office, schools, customs office, and churches, and it became an important transit point for pilgrims traveling to the nearby Rameswaram Temple.
On the night of December 22-23, 1964, a devastating cyclone struck Dhanushkodi with wind speeds reaching up to 280 km/h (174 mph) and massive tidal waves. The storm completely destroyed the town, claiming over 1,800 lives, including passengers aboard a train that was swept off the tracks by the waves.
Following the cyclone, the Indian government declared Dhanushkodi uninhabitable. Survivors left the area, and the town was effectively abandoned, leaving behind ruins of buildings like the railway station, church, and post office.
The cyclone marked the end of Dhanushkodi's status as a settlement and transport hub, turning it into what it is known as today: a ghost town.
Over the years, Dhanushkodi's hauntingly beautiful, untouched beaches and its ruins have attracted tourists, explorers, and photographers.
A road connecting Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi was recently constructed, allowing better access for visitors.
